Papaya Pantanal Tours

Here at Papaya Hostel, we can offer you unique adventure tours in the Pantanal, travelling through several different regions, and reaching remote and beautiful areas which few people have the opportunity to visit.

All our tours include extensive jeep safaris through the Pantanal, plus activities such as boat tours, horseriding, trekking and piranha fishing. At times travel in the Pantanal can be uncomfortable, as it is mostly along dirt roads and simple tracks. The road conditions mean that there can be delays due to the vehicle getting stuck in sand or mud. We have all necessary equipment to deal with these problems, but please bear this in mind when booking your onward travel, as sometimes a 4 day tour can turn into a 5 day tour!

Please note that the availability of these tours is subject to weather and road conditions.

What is the Pantanal?

With a total area of almost 195,000 square kilometres (or 75,000 square miles), the Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world. The vast majority of it is in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, but it also extends into Mato Grosso and Brazil´s neighbouring countries Paraguay and Bolivia.

As such a vast tropical wetland, the Pantanal is a very precious resource of Brazil, home to an array of plant and animal species. Twelve sub-regional ecosystems have been identified within the Pantanal, each of which has its own unique identity and characteristics.

The Pantanal is home to about 3500 plant species, over 650 bird species, 325 fish species, 159 mammals, 53 amphibians and 98 reptiles.

About 80% of the wetlands are submerged during the wet season, when the water level can rise by up to five metres.

The Pantanal’s dry season extends from April to October of each year. During this time, it is possible to access the region by jeep. During the wet season, however, visitors may be forced to enter only by aeroplane.
